Metal Braces

Metal Braces Oxnard, CA

Metal braces have been used by orthodontists to correct occlusion and alignment issues for many patients over the years. Metal braces in Oxnard can help you get the smile of your dreams safely and efficiently.

What Are Metal Braces in Oxnard?

Metal braces consist of brackets, an archwire, and bands.

Brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth. They have an indentation in which the archwire will sit. The raised metal around the indentation allows the bands to fit around the bracket and support the archwire.

The archwire is what helps move the teeth into their ideal position.

What Are the Benefits of Metal Braces?

While not the most aesthetically pleasing option, there is a reason metal braces have been the go-to treatment choice for so long. Benefits of metal braces in Oxnard include the following:

  • Ideal for complex orthodontic cases
  • They can be used in conjunction with other therapies (headgear and palatal expanders, for example)
  • Treatment can be quite fast in some cases
  • Affordability

What Is the Process for Getting Metal Braces in Oxnard?

You’ll start with a consultation with your Oxnard orthodontist. During this appointment, they’ll evaluate your oral health and take photos, intraoral images, and x-rays. These diagnostic images will help them determine the best treatment for your needs. They’ll also take diagnostic models to complete your diagnosis and treatment plan.

What Happens When You’re Ready for Metal Braces?

Once you’re ready to proceed with your treatment plan, your orthodontic team will clean your teeth so there is no plaque under or around the brackets. Then, your orthodontist will bond the brackets to the front of your teeth. After placing the brackets, they’ll place the archwire, supporting it with a band around each bracket. And that’s it!

Before you leave, your orthodontic team will explain how to clean your teeth around the brackets, bands, and archwire. They’ll also explain what to do if you experience an orthodontic emergency or have any soft tissue discomfort or tooth and gum soreness. This is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have.

How Do I Take Care of My Teeth and Braces?

Since your braces are not removable, you’ll care for them while you care for your teeth.

Brushing with Braces:

Start by brushing them at least twice a day. If you can, carry a travel toothbrush with you to brush after all meals and snacks. Though it’s tempting, avoid using a medium- or hard-bristled toothbrush, as these can damage your teeth and gums. Stick to the soft bristles.

Brush with fluoridated toothpaste twice a day to help prevent cavities. If possible, invest in an electric toothbrush with a small round head that can clean around the gum line and brackets. You might even want to purchase a Waterpik, which can help clean food particles from between your teeth and around the brackets.

Flossing with Braces:

Don’t forget to floss once daily, preferably before you sleep.

You’ll need to use a floss threading tool to thread the floss between the teeth and the archwire. Patients find this step annoying and somewhat time-consuming. However, you’ll become faster with practice, and taking the time to floss is worth it. After all, you don’t want to invest in orthodontic care and end up with lots of cavities or gum disease that needs treatment or could result in tooth loss after treatment.

Do I Still Need Regular Dental Cleanings?

Yes! Please visit your dentist at least twice a year. Regular exams and cleanings will help prevent decay, gum disease, and other severe dental issues.
